Residential architects in Montclair, New Jersey

By hand, first

Houses drawn around the way you live.

A new house in Montclair drawn from first sketch to finished building: a steep limewashed gable of two storeys with a zinc roof, a glass link, and a low oak-clad wing opening onto a stone terrace, standing on its own site plan among drawn trees.

  1. Sketch

It starts at your kitchen table.

We sit with you in the house you have and draw the rooms you want, in the order you use them. Nothing is fixed yet.

  2. Plan

The sketch becomes a measured plan.

Every wall is placed to the inch from our own survey, so what we draw is what can be built.

  3. Model

You see the house before anyone builds it.

We model every scheme and walk you round it: the roof, the rooms, the view from the street.

  4. Light

We follow the sun across it.

A daylight study for every room, morning to evening, before a single window is fixed.

  5. Built

Then it stands on its own ground.

We stay through construction and visit the site every week until the keys change hands.

How it goes

Five steps, and you always know which one you are in.

  1. One afternoon

    First visit

We walk the house and the lot with you, at no charge.

  2. Three weeks

    Survey and sketch

We measure everything, then bring you two or three ways to do it.

  3. Eight weeks

    Drawings

Plans, model and daylight study, until the house is right.

  4. Six to ten weeks

    Permits

We file with the town and answer every question the board asks.

  5. Until the keys

    On site

A site visit every week, and a written note after each one.

Most houses take a year from the first visit to the keys; an addition, about half that.

The studio

Three architects, and every drawing is ours.

In their words

They drew our kitchen three times at our own table, and the third one is the room we cook in every night.
